The American Flag Fails: Domestic and Caribbean Humanitarian Crisis

The American Flag is an emblem of American Nationalism. The Preamble of the United States Constitution declares: “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common Defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

America fails to be true to its own declarations and creed.

A recent example of this failure is America’s lack and un-equal humanitarian response to all communities ravaged by Hurricane Irma and Maria – to provide “speedy” restoration of the basic human needs of food, water, shelter, and safety – the definition of being humanitarian: to be humane and compassionate – to be concerned with, and seeking to promote human welfare.

This is what we say on paper. The anthem resounds: “And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
To the contrary, the star-spangled banner (The American Flag that symbolizes freedom and the glorious words penned in the Constitution) waved while millions of Native Americans (the indigenous peoples of America) were annihilated by land theft and mass genocide; it waved over chattel slavery for centuries (the most horrific form of human slavery known to humankind) and Jim Crow (laws that legalized discrimination); it waves now, while over 6000 hate-crimes and associated murders go unprosecuted each year in America.

The signage, the emblem, the words are a lie!

My great-grandparents (were born in slavery to build a strong and wealthy America) – they were not heirs of the Blessings of Liberty. Those glorious benefits listed in the Preamble of the Constitution were intended for white male citizens; and then future generations of white citizens.  What about my children; and my grandchildren pictured above; and your children and grandchildren? How do you suppose we ensure that the Blessings of Liberty are enjoyed by all posterity?  By protests and demonstrations?

Colin Kaepernick and every knee-bent protester in America are saying: America stop being a hypocrite, stop lying.  As Martin Luther, King, Jr. said over 50 years ago the night before his brutal assassination, “America, be true to what you said on paper.”

President Trump called “mothers,” women, of NFL players bitches, because of their knee-bent protests, yet we argue in President Trump’s defense?  It appears to me, that it is President Trump (and his White Nationalist cohorts) that are disrespecting America and its flag – not NFL players and other citizens that peacefully demonstrate against social and economic injustice. President Trump twitted over the course of 24 hours (responding to criticism) instead of “speedily” responding to the basic human needs of hurricane victims residing in USA territories.

This failure, this hypocrisy cannot go un-disclosed and un-checked!  The American Flag is an emblem of America, a prominent American monument. When we practice injustice, when we deny the Blessings of Liberty to all posterity, the American Flag Fails, and we fail as a human race.

Individually, we have little to no power; but collectively, we have the power to “form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common Defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”  Through social, economic and political solidarity, we can start and advance the work to unite and transform the United States of America – so that “all” future generations enjoy the blessings of liberty – the promise for which The American Flag waves.
